Check 21 Technology
Never go to the bank again - Really!
Many people and company's are starting to experience the freedom that NEW Technology offers. Have you ever experienced the frustration of -
- Running to the Bank across town to deposit checks - just to avoid one or several NSF charges that might occur tomorrow?
- Waiting in line to deposit checks because you have a knack for picking the day everyone else chooses too?
- Worrying about missing a call or worse - a customer - because you are away from the office depositing checks?
- Not knowing when funds will be available to draw upon for any large deposit?
- Running to deposit checks only to find the bank closed or temporarily out of service?
- Being simply too tired or busy to take checks to the bank?
- Need a better way to process checks to "weed out" bad checks faster?
Well - Not any more. With a check scanner and an Internet connection, consumers and business no longer have any of these problems. They now scan their checks in the comfort of their business office on their own time schedule and funds availability are entirely within their control. They can deposit checks weekly, daily or hourly if desired. The scanned images and amounts are electronically processed overnight and available much faster than by normal paper deposits.
Whether the amount is keyed manually or image captured (CAR/LAR image capture is usually an optional feature), a notification is sent back to the consumer/merchant acknowledging the amount of the deposit (immediate feedback).
Remote Deposit Software - Hardware
Software that drives the check scanner process for check deposits comes in many forms. Care should be taken to look at the entire process and fees that apply. Some software resides entirely on the consumers/merchants computer and this form does not usually cover the cost to clear the checks (be careful in choosing your software platform). Other software providers resides on a hosted server. With this form, the software provider can offer the clearing service as part of its fee structure (and most do). These are usually the better choice for consumers with smaller volumes of checks to deposit (i.e. < 20 per day)
Check scanners come from many different manufacturers and models but it is imperative that the features of each be considered. The basic features which should be considered are -
- Connectivity
- Scan speed - Resolution - Color
- MICR line read option
- Endorsement option
- Duplex or Simplex Imaging
- Manual or Auto Feed
- No Sort or Multi-bin sorting
A good check scanner will have the following standard features. It will have a USB connection with other options for connections as well. Manual check scanners will start out at speeds of up to 25 checks per minute with full grey scale at a resolution of up to 300 dpi. Most will have a single side (simplex) scanner but a good check scanner will have a duplex standard configuration. Endorsement is usually an optional upgrade and bin sorting upon scanner exit is also a nice feature for bigger corporations.
The benefits that Check 21 has brought to ecommerce is great. Any company can benefit from check scanner/software processing but it is more likely that company's with more than 50 checks per month will pave the way into this new check scanning technology.
